We started talking in science today about what is needed to grow a new bean plant. We used our skills of observation to compare a dried bean to one that had been soaked in water overnight. We saw the 3 parts inside the seed, the tiny plant, the seed coat, and the seed leaf. Below are some pictures of our using our hand lenses to look more closely and filling out our observations on our sheet.

Exploring Science Tools
Finger People
We did an activity called Finger People in class. This is a creative thinking activity. We read a set of directions and the children had to draw exactly what they heard. They could add other details after we were finished. This was an oral activity which also tested the children's listening skills. They used their privacy folders so that they would not be tempted to use other people's imagination and creativity. After we did the activity the kids were able to look at their classmate's work to see how they perceived the directions that were given. Please come check them out! They are posted on our "Think Tank" bulletin board outside our room to display our creative work!
Here was what the students heard:
The person on the left is smiling and wearing a hat.
The next person has very long straight hair and is wearing eyeglasses.
The third person is wearing a baseball hat. She is blowing a bubble that completely covers up the nose on her face.
The next person is wearing some very cool sunglasses.
The fifth person is laughing. A necklace she is wearing is made up of big and small beads.
The next person has eyebrows that go up. He is looking quite surprised, because a big bee has just landed on his rather large nose.
The seventh person is looking at the person with the bee on her nose. She looks surprised, too.
The eighth person is turned around, and all you can see is the back of her head.
Featured on this blog is Emily, John, and Tyler.

A Scientist is....
Our essential question is science for the week is "What fo scientists do?" We started out asking the children to draw a picture of how they see a scientist and write a few sentences describing their job. We then read a book called "The Truth About Scientists" that dispelled some myths of scientists. One for example is that they always wear lab coats. Another is that they only work with chemicals and potions. It was really interesting to see how different all of the student's drawings were. Featured in this blog are John, Lily, and Leena.
