Bird Beak Simulations

We are working on animals in science. We have specifically been learning about adaptations. Today in class we were pretending to be three different types of birds with different shaped beaks. We used a knife, spoon, and chopsticks to model different shapes of beaks. We searched for "food" that was rice, pinto beans, and lima beans. It was hysterical to watch the kids try to work the chopsticks! We learned that the "spoon beak" was the most efficient due to the scooping nature and that the chopsticks didnt get us a whole lot of food. We thought this might also be partly because we dont know how to use them! All in all we had a great time experimenting with different shaped beaks. Posted are pictures of the children trying to scoop up food with their "beaks."
